Morning program:

Al Pesso
We are pleased and proud that the founder of this method, recently honored with a “lifetime achievement award” from the American Association for Body psychotherapy (USABP) will act as main speaker on our second symposium. In his lecture he will reflect on the past and look into the future of his method of PBSP. After the coffee brake he will provide a live demonstration of a therapy session (structure). This will give you the opportunity to get acquainted with the power and scope of the Pesso-method.

Afternoon Program:

In the afternoon program, you can choose from two of four parallel workshops:

Option 1. Master class led by Al Pesso.
In a therapy session (a “structure”) you will be able, as a participant in this symposium, to experience this method ‘personally and ‘bodily’, led by an experienced Pesso-psychotherapist.
In this master class you can either participate as group member, as “client”, or as an observer. The therapist leading the structure will be supervised “live” by Al Pesso, in the presence of the other participants.

Option 2. Workshop on” Boundaries” by Marietta Attekum and Gerrit de Bruine
Internalizing healthy boundaries.
In Pesso therapy we speak in a special way about boundaries. The need for limits is seen as a necessary condition for the development of the child. Children who don’t get enough or too many boundaries in the upbringing, often develop problems as adults. Problems like: boundless behavior such as addiction, looking for danger, acting out, maladapted behavior, inability to feel one’s own borders, doing too much, burn out. But also the opposite: boundaries too tight make the child anxious and unable to become well acquainted with and to trust his own strengths. The so-called ‘ omnipotence ‘, where one is hurled back and forth between omnipotence and powerlessness, creates a special concern in this respect.
The PBSP method has an very specific and authentic way of dealing with these problems: called ‘Limitation’. This is a physical, interactive way of experiencing limits, which appeals he underlying developmental deficits. By experiencing positive limits the right way, they can be introjected and lead to new behavior.
The workshop offers an experiential acquaintance with the method LIMITS. After a theoretical introduction, the workshop will consist of practicing in pairs.

Option 3. Working with “Holes in Roles” by Monique Cuppen and Wouter Wouters
The “holes in roles” concept is one of the central concepts that Al Pesso developed and increasingly elaborated in recent years. There is a certain kinship with the concept of ‘parentification’ but it is more than that. It’s about the process that occurs when a child hears stories about injustice or shortages within the family, or witnesses these himself. This appeals to the innate desire in every child for justice.
When this happens even before the basic needs of the child are met, and even before the child can administer his emotional and physical responses, this leads to an emotional overload in the body. This will go hand in hand with the omnipotent fantasy, where the child thinks it is the only one who can bring a solution for these injustices. This is a process that is fully unconscious to the child. These children often become adults who feel responsible for everything and everyone, eager to take care of others. But who himself cannot receive care. They often come in therapy with complaints of depression and burn-out.
To relieve this emotional overload, Al Pesso has found a way to replace the (unconscious) inner film, in which the child plays the lead role as savior for his family, by a conscious film, in which the family-history is repaired by people who should have been there then. This movie becomes visible using role figures or objects, which symbolize this right people. When this happens during a therapy session, often a dramatic (physically detectable) shift takes place, healing the emotional overload. Thus creating a greater willingness in the therapy to heal ones own basic needs deficits.

In this workshop you will have the opportunity to personally and physically get acquainted with this technique.

Option 4.Working with Children by Michael Bachg (English spoken):

This workshop gives an introduction to “feeling-seen”, including video demonstrations of the associated process. Feeling-Seen is a body-oriented and neuro-biological founded psychotherapy as well as a well-founded educational method for children, young people and their parents, based on PBSP. With this method we can offer support to children, by letting them experience their emotions consciously, expressing them and naming them. At the same time we can help the parents to discover the hidden developmental needs of their children. Thus we can encourage parents to meet these needs: physically, emotionally and intellectually.

Michael Bachg will show videos and a 5-stages model of the process within a typical feeling seen session. This model offers a clear directive and a useful conceptual framework of the process. Thus you can extend your knowledge and expertise in the field of family therapy, child therapy, education and upbringing. Even if you work predominantly with adults the videos will enlarge your ability to see the child in your clients, when they talk about their childhood.
